11th October 2009 Kona Hawaii results
Craig Alexander won his second world Ironman Triathlon title in 8:20:21.
Swim 2.4 miles 50:57 Bike 112 miles 4:37:33 and 26.2 mile marathon 2:48:05
Almost perfect conditions made it easier than normal on the bike but in true Kona fashion resulted in being cooked during the run.
Chris Lieto had a 12 minute lead over Craig Alexander 2008 champion at the start of the Ironman marathon.
Chris overall finish time was quicker than achieved by the winners in 2001 2002 & 2004.
Even with 3:02:35 run (incredibly only 31 seconds faster in the marathon than Chrissie Wellington ironman marathon split) he finished 2 minutes and 35 seconds behind Craig who recorded a 2:48 marathon to defend his 2008 title.
Only Scot Tinley, Dave Scott, Mark Allen, Luc Van Lierde, Timothy DeBoom & Peter Reid have won the world iIonman champs twice.
Chrissie Wellington from the Uk won her 3rd consequctive title in a new Kona course record beating 1992 Paula Newby –Fraser’s record set back in 1992 of 8:55:28 by 1 minute and 26 seconds
Chrissie is the only one of 3 females to win 3 wolrd Ironman titles at Kona ever.
Amazing Chriise finished 23rd overall and she was speechless after she crossed the finish line saying this was the hardest thing she had ever done.
Her times were for the 2.4 mile swim 54:31 a very fast 4:52:06 for the 112 miles and 3:03:05 for the marathon.
Chrissie Wellington joins an exclusive club with Natasha Badman & Paula Newby –Fraser of only 3 Females to win Hawaii 3 times.
