Congratulations on taking the first thought to joining our triathlon community.
First time Beginner or Novice tips you need to consider.
Swim Bike Run train at least once each every 7 days.
Never miss out on your weakest discipline each week or technical aspect of triathlon.
Fitness aspect
It could be swimming (pool or open water or both)
Cycling up hill
Running without stopping in the final part of a triathlon
Technical aspect
Swimming in a straight line without going off course
Not swallowing water in open water
Cycling while drinking
Practice getting onto bike dismounting and running with bike
Confidence aspect.
Novice mistakes to avoid
Un ball your socks and leave them in each shoe in the transition area to remind you to put them on.
Sunglasses (clear tinted prescription) – place them inside your helmet to remind you to put them on before cycling.
Clothing – What to wear
If the air temperature is likely to be below17 C or 62.6 F degrees then you need to put something on after the swim.
What to wear will depend on if it is an open water swim or pool swim outside air temperature wind chill factor and if you feel the cold or not.
My suggestion would be for a sprint or Olympic distance triathlon in warm weather wear a tri suit/two piece suit for the swim and either a gilet, windproof easy to get on and off and should not make you sweat compared to a full length cycling top.
You must practice swimming then cycling & also do not forget it the suit is wet it can also rub in the run.
Suggest you take a dri-fit top gilet cycling top and decide on the day. You could ask someone when you get there what they suggest.
Think how you are going to wear your race number? Pinned to your warm clothing or using a tri-belt which you clip around your waist when you exit the water.
First time things you should consider
1. Go and watch a triathlon
2. Volunteer near or in transition so you can see this important part of the Triathlon.
2. Watch as much video coverage of triathlon as possible, especially the big city triathlons which show people form all walks of life and abilities taking part. This will help you believe you can also do it.
Practice swim to bike and bike to run sessions do not worry if you have to get changed etc and it takes you 5 minutes or more it is still essential part of prepping. Get your legs use to running after the bike also known a sback2back sessions. Find out how long it takes for you to find your running legs, 1 minute 5 minutes 10 minutes or never?
Open water swimming

Safety -First learn to lay on your back build up confidence should you need to stop for any reason you know what to do. Learn how to breathe deeply this is for safety should you have a panic attack or swallow some water.
Ask questions no matter how silly they may seem, often someone who is listening has always wanted to know the same answer as you!
If you need help with panic attacks contact mark details on the home page, I can help you.
Nothing NEW on race Day. Not even if it claims to help you go faster without practicing with new things it probably won’t help on your triathlon day. Clothing can rub, new wheels may not work or slip with an old chain, nutrition may make you ill or give you side affects.
Know the race rules, every event may have slightly different rules and regulations to make the event safe and fair for everyone.
Transition Training
Even putting on & off your helmet needs lots of practice.
Do not forget it is supposed to be FUN!!
See you at the Races!
